How to dress for your body shape - Wedding Dress '23 Edition

I’ve posted this before so I thought I would give you a new updated 2023 edition…

Scouring Pinterest and Instagram, finding a dress to fall in love with is literally just the beginning… you can pin away till your little hearts content but until I get a dress on your body, this is what’s going to lead us down the path as to what is right for you and your body shape.

Some of you are often a bit blown away when I ask, what you would wear to an awards ceremony or perhaps the races? but knowing this gives me an idea as to what your body is telling me, what you feel confident in and how you see yourself when you look your best.

The dress looking good on you is one thing, but you feeling amazing in your dress is what’s going to hit you in your feels.

Over the years, we will all have gained some knowledge as to what our body shape is and how to dress it in a way that’s the most flattering, we all have our favourite parts and each and every one of us has something that we desperatly want to hide away from the world.

I want to know that when, in that moment in which you are about to take that first step down the aisle, you not only look insanely stunning but you feel it to! I need to know that you look and feel like your most amazing, most beautiful, most confident self.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of body shapes and how to dress them… wedding style… here’s just a few quick tips to get you started…

  • RESEARCH - not just pinning photos of models in your favourite gowns, hunt out some #realbride images, find those gorgeous brides who have a similar shape to yourself and see what they’re wearing, what shapes are they rocking down the aisle?

  • BE OPEN MINDED - I know you will have heard this a million times but it cannot be said enough, you might know your body and how you like to dress it, but I will know how that dress is going to look on your body which leads me to my next quick tip…

  • TRUST ME - I know its sounds really boring and that its something that I always bang on about, but it’s my job, isn’t it? To make sure you hit that aisle looking your very best. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s very much in my interest for you to look shit hot in your photos as you are not the only one wanting them on your walls!

  • STYLE - Before your appointment and even before we’ve started chatting about your ideas, have a trawl through the wardrobe, go through the archives and find all those photos of a time where you knew you looked good, what was you wearing? Off the shoulder, plunging neckline? What was it that made you feel amazing in that outfit?

TRIANGLE/PEAR

Starting with easiest one, my own body shape…

With my bottom half being bigger than my bust, I need a gown that’s going to balance me out, draw attention away from my bum and back up to the bust… (not literally but you get what I mean) Maybe even something that’s going to give me the illusion of that lusted after hourglass figure. That could be with beautiful detailing across the shoulders and neckline or for 2023, a gorgeous oversized puff sleeve to contrast from a fitted silhouette? Ideally we want to highlight that waist and keep the bottom half as light as possible in terms of the fabric, think delicate lace, soft silky tulle, anything thats going to give us lots of romantic movement.

INVERTED TRIANGLE

Here we have the same principle, just upside down. This time it’s the bottom half of you that needs to be balanced out and this is where our trusty ballgown comes in. A beautiful low v neckline, potentially even a plunge (if we can push it that far) is going to bring the eye down from away from your broad shoulders. A fuller skirt in terms of volume will balance you out but don’t worry I’m not talking big fat gypsy style here… unless of course your motto is go big or go home?

HOURGLASS

I mean you are the holy grail of bodies, men want to be with you and women want to be you… I am wrong? Now all I’m going to say here is, show those curves off girl!! A column (or sheath) dress is going to cover you all up and we need those curves need to be seen in all their glory! What more is there to say… a fitted mermaid/trumpet/fit and flare… Always had your heart set on a ball gown, then make sure the bodice is beautifully fitted even corset style to highlight those curves.

ATHLETIC

For your beautiful bodies, we want to create the curves for you. Alines or mermaids are were we want to go, we want to cinch in that waist and create some drama on the bodice with some lace, and then either a deep v neckline with a cap sleeve combo or maybe even a halterneck. We want to give the eye some sort of curve to look at going up and down the body.
